Ten of Ten

My good friend Jonathan asked me what my favourite film was when we first got to know each other. I just froze because of course I have a different favourite film for every mood that I'm in. Sometimes it's a serious film, other times it's a music video, and other times it's a rubbish film but one which I have strong nostalgic memories of.

That led me to think of a new sort of 'mental game' called 'ten-of-ten'. In this mental game you think of something like 'Desert Island Discs' but you get to chose 10 categories of things (which might include music discs but it's your choice), and within each of those categories you choose 10 times.

Now you can play ten of ten anyway that you want. For instance ten items in ten categories of your favourite things – sort of the desert island disc version. The way that I play it most though is to think of things that have defined me. That is if I didn't have, or encounter the thing, I would be a different person from the one that I am today. So currently i have categories such as 'films', 'books', 'relationships', 'music' but also 'food items'. My mother has something similar to me but for her it is complete 'meals'.

I realise that this is not too dissimilar from a personality test first called the Q-Methodology. In essence making a selection with some parameters makes for an interesting insight into a person, especially if you ask them to explain their choices.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.
